Hello Community,

Many devices that are single band 2.4 GHz capable only, such as certain printers, home security, cameras, Internet of Things (IoT) devices will not connect to a network that is using band steering because of compatibility limitations.

Learn how to connect your devices without needing to disable band steering. These steps only apply to the Ignite WiFi Gateway Gen 1 (XB6) and Gen 2 (XB7).

Steps

  1. Open an Internet browser (e.g. Google Chrome) and locate the address bar.
  2. In the address bar (not search bar), type in the following: 10.0.0.1 and press the enter key on your keyboard.
  3. You will be presented with your WiFi modem login page
  4. Enter the following information:
    1. Username: admin
    2. Password: password
(These are the default login credentials. If you have previously changed your password, use that instead).
  5. Select the Login button
Note: This feature is only available through the modem admin page, not the Ignite HomeConnect App
  6. Navigate to Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi
  7. Click on Edit for 5 GHz Frequency Band

  8. Click on Disable and then Save Settings
Note: After disabling 5 GHz, all wireless devices will switch to 2.4GHz automatically as it has the same SSID as 5 GHz. Additionally, any Pods will go offline for approximately 10-15 minutes.

  9. Connect the device in question to the network
  10. Once you have confirmed the device is connected, go back to step 8 and select Enable
  11. Once the 5 GHz network is enabled again, pods will automatically come back online and the devices from step 9 will remain connected to the 2.4 GHz band.
Note: It may take several minutes for devices to switch back to 5 GHz once it has been re-enabled

Please keep in mind, many IoT/Smart devices use a smartphone/tablet app from the manufacturer to onboard these devices.

If the smartphone/tablet is on 5GHz (which is quite common with band steering enabled) the manufacturer's app and single band 2.4GHz IoT/Smart devices won't communicate with each other as they are on different bands and that's why the onboarding fails.
